Managing Cost of Cloud for Data Management:
Identifying cost and opportunity

Cloud computing has become a ubiquitous architecture – but is “somebody else’s computer” always the best option for managing data in the real world?

network, server, system

The last decade and a half has seen the widespread adoption of cloud-based data management architectures for both structured and unstructured data including a range of 3rd party tools and services that can operate at a very low level in our data pipelines. Cloud has many benefits, particularly for small businesses seeking to compete at scale with larger peers, maturing adopters are finding that there are often hidden costs. Add to this the risk of widespread impacts if cloud-based services fail or fail to deliver, and Data Leaders need to ask the questions about the ‘total cost of ownership’ and whether the promised savings are offset by a need to invest in other areas of governance and control.

Focus Areas for Discussion

In this session, delegates will explore how the architectural decisions that we take around the adoption of cloud computing can give rise to hidden costs. From vendor lock-in to compliance and security costs, to the simple transaction costs of putting data into the cloud and taking it out of the cloud, organisations need to take an objective view of the real costs and opportunities of cloud computing. And this is before we even begin to consider the potential issues and risks that arise from cloud platform providers taking advantage of your organisation’s data to train their AI models (hello Docusign, Adobe, Microsoft etc.

Questions that may arise might include:

  • What are the actual costs to an organisation of a Cloud-based data architecture?
  • What drives these costs and how can we avoid them?
  • When we consider ‘Total Cost of Ownership’ for our architectures, are we recognising the issues of regulatory compliance, data quality, data literacy etc
  • How can we figure out what costs are investment and what costs are just waste?
